L.A. City Hall

DTLA Scavenger Hunt: Grand Park Edition

Here’s a quick six-target DTLA scavenger hunt. Easy, maybe fifteen minutes on foot, downhill. Start at the Music Center plaza–Hope Street side, end at the iconic L.A. City Hall. No app required — just eyes and a willingness to notice what’s long been there. Want more? Locate the source of each image from this post as you go. Don’t forget to tag us (@scavtopia most places) if/when you post triumphant selfies!

Start here — #1 A massive bronze tangle — human figures locked together, straining upward, nothing peaceful about the effort. The title disagrees.

Nearby…

Find #2 Six bronze faces smile out. All the same last name — except one. Find the bust where the surname has slightly drifted.

Cross Grand Avenue.

Find #4 A president on a pedestal. That part isn’t the clue. The full text of his most famous speech is cast in metal. Two hundred and seventy-two words. The man who gave it thought it had failed. Read it from the beginning. Notice the word he keeps returning to — the one that carries the whole argument on its back.

Walk toward the park…

Find #3 A man in a suit stands, fist clenched. Is that a vest under his jacket? Which president did he nominate and how did that turn out?

Enter the park.

Find #5 The fountain — wide, circular, hard to miss — greets you. Find the plaque that names it for a man with a title so bureaucratic it barely sounds real — but he ran the entire county for twenty-five years, and this is what he got: a circle of cement (and sometimes water!) in a park, and a sentence calling it a symbol of good government. Decide for yourself if the fountain earns that.

Wander down…

Find #6 On the side of a courthouse, gold paint over carved stone. Something’s lost its head. What is it?

There’s plenty more to see as you continue down to City Hall. The Boreal garden…the Court of American Flags (find the Betsy Ross!)…the laser-cut Sakura Grove rock…and giant lawn, persistent through years of play and protests. There’s no rush. Enjoy!
